Common questions, plain answers

The questions clients ask us most, answered the way we answer them across the table.

Is a SIP safe?

A SIP is a way of investing, not a product. You put a fixed amount into a mutual fund every month. How much the value goes up and down depends on the fund you choose: equity funds move with the share market, debt funds much less. Investing every month over many years smooths out the ups and downs, but returns are never guaranteed.

Can I stop or pause my SIP?

Yes, at any time, and the fund house charges nothing for stopping. Many funds also let you pause for a few months. What you have already invested stays invested until you choose to withdraw it.

What is the smallest amount I can start with?

Many funds accept ₹500 or ₹1,000 a month, and some go lower. Starting small and raising the amount with every salary hike works better than waiting to start big.

What is the difference between a direct plan and a regular plan?

Both invest in exactly the same portfolio. A direct plan is bought straight from the fund house with no distributor, so its yearly expense ratio is lower. A regular plan is bought through a distributor like us: the fund house pays us a trail commission out of the expense ratio, and you get our help choosing, setting up and reviewing. We only deal in regular plans. If you prefer to manage everything yourself, a direct plan can suit you better.

How does FundsFirst get paid?

You pay us no fee. Fund houses pay us a commission on regular plans, which is included in the scheme's expense ratio and disclosed to you when you invest.

Is my money safe with FundsFirst?

Your money never comes to us. It goes from your bank account directly to the fund house, and the units are held in your name with the registrar (CAMS or KFintech). Every month you receive a Consolidated Account Statement showing all your holdings, so you can always check them yourself.

Can I withdraw my money whenever I want?

From open-ended funds, yes. The money usually reaches your bank in one to three working days. Tax-saving ELSS funds have a three-year lock-in, and some funds charge a small exit load if you withdraw early.

What do I need for KYC?

Your PAN, Aadhaar (or another address proof), bank account details and a photo. KYC can usually be completed online with an Aadhaar OTP or a short video call, and we help you through it.

Do you only handle mutual funds?

Mutual funds and SIPs are the core. We also help with term and health insurance, NRI investments, portfolio management services (PMS) and specialised investment funds (SIF), so your goals sit in one place.

What should I do when the market falls?

First, nothing in a hurry. A fall matters most for money you need soon, so we look at each goal's date with you. Money for goals many years away usually has time to recover; money for goals in the next year or two should not have been in equity in the first place.

Can NRIs invest through you?

Yes. See our guide for NRIs: NRE and NRO accounts, KYC from abroad, and which fund houses accept investors living in the US and Canada.
